Installing Write-N-Cite on your Windows profile when using Portland State Research Computers

When you are logged into a Portland State Research Computer in the Library, you may install Write-N-Cite as follows:

  1. Word must not be open when installing this plug-in. To install, use the Windows Start menu and navigate to Programs > RefWorks > Install Write-N-Cite Plugin for Word
  2. Click OK twice. The Write-N-Cite plug-in for Word will be installed for your profile.
  3. Open Word. To have this plug-in visible within Word, choose View > Toolbars > Refworks

If you are using Write-N-Cite on a computer off-campus, you must configure Write-N-Cite to use the Library's proxy system

If you are using Write-N-Cite off campus, you will be prompted to enter a group code in order to access your RefWorks account, unless you follow these instructions. The Portland State implementation of RefWorks does not use a group code. Instead, the Library's proxy server is used for remote access to RefWorks and all library electronic resources. RefWorks has developed a version of Write-N-Cite that is compatible with the proxy server. Follow the instructions below to download and install Write-N-Cite.

  1. Log into RefWorks, choose Tools > Write-N-Cite, then download and install Write-N-Cite on the off-campus computer.
  2. You will need to configure Write-N-Cite with the Library's proxy server. Use your Windows Start button, then navigate to All Programs > RefWorks > WNC Proxy Configuration Utility.
  3. Enter the following URL in the Proxy Server URL field, all in one line: https://www-refworks-com.proxy.lib.pdx.edu/Refworks/?WNC=true
  4. Run Write-N-Cite as usual. The library authentication screen will appear. After authenticating with your Portland State Odin/Webmail account, you will be able to access your RefWorks account through Write-N-Cite.
