Finding articles
To find articles in journals, magazines, or newspapers, you will need to use one of the Library's print indexes or article databases. An index or article database will allow you to look for articles by title, by author, or by a few keywords that describe your topic. The databases most useful for research in womens studies are:
Sage Family Studies Abstracts
HQ728 .S24 Reference | 2nd floor
Citations and abstracts for journal articles in all aspects of family life
America History and Life
America: History and Life is the primary source of citations for articles, book reviews, book chapters, and dissertations on American and Canadian history. The database is not full text, but links are provided to full-text articles in other Library databases. Only sources published since 1964 are covered.
Historical Abstracts
Historical Abstracts is the primary source of citations for articles, book reviews, book chapters, and dissertations on world historical events from 1450-present (excluding the United States and Canada). The database is not full text, but links are provided to full-text articles in other Library databases. All abstracts are in English, though source journals from all languages are included. Only sources published since 1954 are indexed.
PAIS International
Citations on topics of public policy and public debate. Coverage of variety of information sources (periodicals, books, hearings, reports, web sites and government documents) from US and international sources.
PsycInfo
Published by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO provides citations and indexing to the published psychology literature from 1879-present. Searches may be limited by type of publication, age and sex of research population, type of experimental design, etc.
Sociological Abstracts
Citations to the international literature in sociology and related disciplines. Topics include: culture and social structure; demography; evaluation research; family and social welfare; history and theory of sociology; management and complex organizations; mass phenomena and political interactions; methodology and research; rural and urban sociology; social psychology and group interaction. Coverage of journal articles (drawn from more than 1800 journals), books, book chapters, conference papers, book reviews and dissertations from 1963 - present.
Finding books
Search PSU Library's catalog Vikat for books, journals (not individual articles), videos, government information, music and other material owned by the Library. You may search by keywords, author, title or subject headings.
Browsing the library shelves by call number ranges is another strategy for locating information on a topic; call numbers can help you get to the "right neighborhood" in the library stacks.
HQ1101-HQ2030 Womens studies, Feminism
Subject headings allow you to search library catalogs for materials on a particular topic. Often subject heading searching can be more productive than searching by simple keywords. Listed here are some major subject headings of interest for research in womens studies.
