Congressional Hearings Digital Collections Logo

The Congressional Hearings Digital Collection (1823-1979) merges published and unpublished hearings into one database so users can utilize both types of materials together in their research. Published hearings printed by the Government Printing Office(GPO) are the official record of committee hearings.

Official hearings usually include:

Written and oral statements of witnesses;

Transcripts of the verbal question-and-answer session between committee members and witnesses;

Reports, exhibits, and other materials submitted for the record by witnesses;

Correspondence and other materials submitted by interested parties.

The American West: Sources from the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana at the Newberry Library, Chicago

This collection includes manuscripts, broadsides, books, maps, photos, and other materials focusing on the American West from 1722 to 1939.

This new Library database, American West, is a great resource for images and primary sources pertaining to the exploration, exploitation, and development of the western United States.

"The American West remains the most imagined region of the United States. Its history, for many, embodies the nation's. As this important and exciting resource reveals, there are many ways to access and enjoy American history".

Millar Library Building Celebrates 36th Anniversary

Portland State University Library is pleased to note the 36th anniversary of its building’s naming as the “Branford Price Millar Library."

On March 25, 1975, through a chain of events that began with a resolution passed at the PSU Faculty Senate and ended with approval from the State Board of Higher Education, the building formerly known as “Library West” was renamed in honor of the late Branford P. Millar. This international-style structure, which curves around a majestic, copper beech tree in the heart of the campus, is instantly recognizable today in Portland’s South Park Blocks...more

Spring Exhibit

PSU Library Special Collections presents a “grand tour” of Baedeker travel guides, spanning Europe, Britain, and the Mediterranean region before and after World War I.

Karl Baedeker’s comprehensive yet portable travel guidebooks, first published in 1839, answered the practical needs of a new kind of traveler emerging in the 19th century: the tourist. Baedeker’s international series kept pace with urban development, technological breakthroughs in transportation, the rising industry of tourism, and political upheavals, particularly the First World War.

In addition, Baedeker’s meticulously detailed maps and precise, copious descriptions make each guidebook a microcosmic masterpiece of data collection and printing, inspiring collectors’ interest and the curiosity of armchair travelers more than a century later.
