Scholarly Communication is the means by which scholars record contributions and communicate research findings. It is the way by which we document the progression of knowledge within and across disciplines to form the knowledge record. In general, this phrase refers to formal means of communication, such as publishing in journals, books, conference proceedings and elsewhere, and includes the processes of creating, evaluating, editing, distributing, organizing and accessing information. The purpose of this website is to educate and inform faculty, administrators, and interested students about the issues and trends affecting the scholarly communication system, more specifically to aid those involved in the pursuit of academic publishing, and those responsible for broader budget and policy issues regarding the funding of such activities, in understanding the broader context for these activities. It is hoped that by understanding the threats and opportunities inherent in the current scholarly communication environment, that scholars, the library, and the university can move together toward a more sustainable system.
