User Rights User Responsibilities
Access to collections that support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research
  • Use resources without damaging them
Right to intellectual freedom and to privacy
  • Respect the intellectual freedom and privacy of others
Access to computers, equipment and facilities
  • Comply with posted acceptable use policies
  • Use resources, computers, equipment or facilities with care and respect
  • Keep food and beverages away from Library computers
Knowledgeable, courteous, and effective service from Library Staff
  • Treat Library Staff with respect and courtesy
  • Allow sufficient time for the identification and delivery of information resources
Reference assistance and instruction to improve your research skills
  • Learn how to use Portland State Library effectively
Clean environment
  • Put trash in proper recycling & trash bins
  • Notify Library Staff of spills, vandalism, etc.
Safe environment
  • Treat other users with respect and courtesy
  • Keep your personal belongings secure
  • Abide by federal, state, and local criminal statutes and ordinances
  • Do not engage in disruptive or disorderly conduct, including but not limited to: fighting, physical or verbal threats, willful destruction, exhibitionism, harassment, impeding access, loud or obscene language
  • Pets, bicycles, shopping carts, skateboards, scooters, and weapons / items that look like weapons are expressly prohibited, as well as items that create hazards
  • Wear shoes and shirt
  • Notify Library Staff of any threatening or unsafe situations
Conducive environment for research and study
  • Supervise children at all times
  • Do not offend others with offensive personal hygiene or strong odors
  • Honor Library signage and designated quiet floors and cell phone areas
  • Respect others with appropriate volume

Reasonable accommodation for accessibility

Assistance animals always welcome

  • Please call ahead if you require large numbers of materials to be retrieved or bring a personal assistant with you
Conscientious and timely response to complaints and suggestions
  • Notify staff of any issues or damage that need to be addressed to provide a more welcome, clean, safe, effective learning environment

Any behavior that, in the sole discretion of Library staff, interferes with any user's rights or is inconsistent with user responsibilities may result in removal of the person from the Library and may also result in loss of library privileges.
