Construction Phase Begins for Library’s Learning Ground

Date: 07/26/2011
On August 1, 2011, contractors will begin active construction on the north wing of Millar Library’s 1st floor. The area will become the Library’s new Learning Ground, a collaborative learning environment with new technology systems and furnishings. The Learning Ground includes the OIT computer lab on the first floor plus an additional 850 square feet of computing and group study space, making use of the old Assistive Technology Center. The project encompasses the north wing of the first floor from the coffee cart to the computer lab. It will feature upgraded computer tables, digital signage, improved assistive technologies, and more seating conveniently located for access to power, wireless printing, and technology support. The renovated OIT computer lab is expected to open by the time school starts in Fall with a few additional workstations and new open seating with laptop use in mind and convenient access to the student quota printers for wireless printing. This "productivity zone" is likely to remain the busiest computer lab on campus. A new “Sandbox” area between the coffee cart and upgraded computing lab will add a student-focused space for group study and experimentation with new technologies. This might include testing a portable digital white board, wireless video displays, or touch screen surfaces that could later be deployed to other areas on campus after getting student feedback. Construction on the Sandbox is expected to continue through fall term. A joint effort of the University Library and OIT, the project is funded by both departments and the Student Building Fee. The first phase of the project began in June when the OIT computer lab was dismantled in preparation for construction.
