Special Collections acquires the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Collection

Date: 09/24/2010
The Portland State Library Special Collections is pleased to announce the recent accession of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Collection. Donated by Carl Abbott, Portland State Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, and Margery Post Abbott, this collection includes primary and secondary materials documenting the creation and implementation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the first regional land use planning effort by the federal government in partnership with state and local governments. The collection supported research for the 1997 book, Planning a New West: The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, by Carl Abbott, Sy Adler, and Margery Post Abbott, and is an important addition to Portland State Library’s significant planning, related holdings. You can learn more from Dr. Abbott about the history of the Columbia River Gorge at the upcoming Oregon Encyclopedia History Night at McMenamins Edgefield on Tuesday, September 28 from 6:30 pm: http://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/
