Library Bike Parking Proposal

Date: 06/16/2010
Library Bicycle Parking Proposal The Library, in collaboration with Transportation Services, is planning to provide additional covered bike parking near the entrance to the Library. New bike parking on the Library porch will help meet an increased demand for covered bicycle parking and is in alignment with Portland State’s effort to provide a more sustainable campus. This is also part of an effort to reduce smoking at the Library entrance. The library regularly gets complaints from students, staff, and faculty about smokers congregating at the bench on the Library porch and littering the area with butts. To get into the library, people have to walk through the area and this negatively affects people with asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory issues. The Library has met with students and faculty involved with the creation of the bench on the Library porch, as well as student bicycle advocates. Efforts to enforce no-smoking rules have not been successful, so the bench will be removed to make way for bike parking facilities. While the removal of the bench is disappointing, all involved have been understanding of the problem and how the space might be used positively. Introducing bicycle parking in this space was seen to be a solution that will continue to use this space for the benefit of students and to help meet the increasing demand for covered bicycle parking. The Parking area is at the North end of the Library porch. Parking cannot be placed on the South end of the Library porch, because this would block ramp access to the Library. Please let us know what you think of this proposal. Drawings and a brief survey are available at: Thanks for your input!
