This first began as a special report in 1969, and became part of the Economic Census with a separate classification in 1972. Starting in 1997, it is classified in the Economic Census (C 3.277).

Earlier economic information for outlying areas was gathered and published as part of the other economic censuses. This began as a separate classification in 1972, and continues to be published under this classification.
