PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

To meet the information needs of PSU students, Portland State University Library creates and implements a curriculum using a variety of formats including course integrated instruction, seminars, credit-bearing classes, drop-in sessions, courseware based classes, online tutorials and guides, and individual consultation. We continually augment the tutorials and resource aggregations posted on our website as we work to ensure a sustainable instructional program.

Instruction at PSU Library is learner centered and encourages all students to be self-sufficient, lifelong, and technology-enabled learners who understand how to retrieve, critically evaluate, manage, and use information. The program strives to provide focused instruction at the point of need for specialized information and/or research proficiency. The program recognizes transition points in a student’s education and seeks to address the information needs of freshmen through graduate students.

The goal of the library’s instructional program is to integrate informationliteracy into the curriculum campus-wide. The fulfillment of this goal requiresa staff dedicated to strong pedagogical principles founded on teaching and learningobjectives, collaboration with University faculty, the implementation of a varietyof learning opportunities presented in multiple mediums and the continuous refinementof its curriculum through assessment practices.
