 Books

There are a few places you can look to find books.

Step 1:check our Library Catalog (see below)

Step 2:if we don't have the book you need (whether it's checked out, or missing, or we don't own it) then you can search the Summit Catalog.

Step 3:If Summit doesn't have it, then you can check the WorldCat database and request the book from ILLiad - Interlibrary Loan

The Library Catalog (Vikat) tells you what our library owns, whether they are books, journals, e-journals, AV materials, etc. To open the catalog from the library homepage, click on the Catalog (Vikat) link.

You can search the catalog by keyword, author, title, subject, or a combination of these in the Advanced Keyword search.

  • Keyword search: use this when you just have a general idea of what kinds of books you want; try to come up with as many different words as you can to describe what you're looking for and do individual searches for each

  • Author search: use this when you know the author of a book you want
    • be sure to type it in last name, first name

  • Title search: use this when you know the title of the book

  • Subject search: use this when you want to know the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for your topic
    • LCSH terms are descriptive tags attached to books--they describe the subject(s) of a book
    • When you do a subject search, you will get an alphabetical list of LCSH terms that match what you typed in
    • Click on an LCSH term to view all the books with that tag on them
    • You can also get suggested LCSH terms for your topic by finding one book on your topic and looking at the subjects listed on that book's record; click on the LCSH terms to take you to other books with those tags

  • Advanced Keyword search: this allows you to plug in different kinds of information at once into the catalog, and will sometimes be very helpful for retrieving more relevant results. You can also cut out irrelevant results by limiting your searches:
    • Limit your results to specific collections, like Government Information, Journals, Oregon Historical Society, and more
    • Limit your results to a specific material, like maps, records/CDs, or music scores, etc.
