Computing Access for the General Public - Library Policy
Home » Services » Computing in the Library » Computing Policies

This Policy describe the ways in which members of the general public and other non-Portland State affiliates may use Portland State University Library computer systems, network, peripheral accessories, and computer accounts.

Academic Priority for Computing and Internet Access

The computer equipment, systems, and network in the PSU Library are intended to support the research, learning, and teaching activities of current PSU students, faculty, and staff. In addition, the PSU Library is committed to serving the research needs of the general public and other Affiliated PSU Community Users that cannot be served by area public libraries. The Library reserves the right, however, to give priority in service to current PSU students, faculty, and staff due to the high level of demand for limited equipment and materials. Restricting the number of computers available for public computing and setting limits on the time that the general public may have to use computing equipment are necessary, given the constraints in resources.

All users must follow the Portland State Library Conduct Guidelines. The guidelines are posted on the Web at /rights.html.

PSU Computing and Network Acceptable Use Policy

All users who access computers and network resources in the PSU Library must follow restrictions set forth in the PSU Computer & Network Acceptable Use Policy. The policy is posted on the Web at http://www.oit.pdx.edu/aup/.

Repeated violations of these policies and guidelines, or in any rules stated below, will result in permanent loss of access privileges on the Public Internet Computers or student disciplinary action.

Library Resource Computers Requiring No Login Authentication

All Portland State Library users have access to Library Resource Computers. These computers do not require login authentication. They are located on all floors of the Portland State Library and provide access to the Portland State Library Catalog (Vikat), research-related materials, electronic resources, government information sites, and selected Internet domains.

Internet Computers for the General Public

For purposes of this policy, the general public is defined as those users of the Portland State Library who are not current Portland State students, faculty and staff.

Members of the general public are welcome to use the 50 Library Resource Computers (kiosks) located throughout the Library. These machines will provide access to the Library's Catalog, collections, and numerous research and educational Web sites.
