Appealing Charges
You may appeal if you believe library charges have been mistakenly assessed or extenuating circumstances warrant charge cancellation or reduction. Appeals should be made within 30 days of the original billing by the Business Office.
Notices of overdue materials are sent as a courtesy reminder to your email account. Non-receipt of an overdue notice does not exempt you from late fees or charges. It is your responsibility to ensure your current email address is in your Portland State Library record.
You can appeal library charges by submitting a Petition for Waiver of Portland State Library Charges.
Reasons generally not acknowledged as valid for cancelling or reducing library charges:
- Lack of knowledge of library policy
- Disagreement with library fine/fee structure
- Inability to pay library fees or charges
- Material loaned to a third party
- Non-receipt or late receipt of library reminder notice
- Returning items to library other than PSU library
- Being out of town
- Forgetting the due date
- Term breaks, leaves, vacations, exams
- Transportation problems
Returning a book with one of these reasons will not reduce your library fines.
