1 - Some services require a PSU ODIN network account. To activate, see the OIT Helpdesk in Smith Memorial Student Union, room 18
2 - For full privileges, users must be entered by the Registrar or Human Resources into the Banner system
3 - Because Portland State University is funded mostly from student tuition (less than 20% State-funded), membership fees are required for community borrowers.  It is recommended that community borrowers use their public library membership to access special materials.
4 - Restrictions imposed by the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) prevent the library from providing unrestricted public Internet access.  The local public library has wi-fi and Internet access for their members and also supplies "guest" passes for visitors.

5 - See also Circulation for information about loan rules for specific types of materials

Accessibility

Patrons with disabilities or in need of assistance to retrieve materials from the collection, please request assistance at the nearest public service desk or the Circulation Counter. For large numbers of materials, please make arrangements for an assistant to accompany you or contact the Circulation Counter ahead of time. Staff will assist you immediately, if the desk is not busy.

Renewing Materials

You can extend the due date on your library materials online, with some exceptions: renewals are not accepted for recalled items, course reserves, or items loaned on an exception basis. Some renewals may be denied if you have reached the maximum renewal limit, have excessive library charges, or your library card has expired. Items from Summit or ILL have renewal restrictions that are noted on the checkout band.

Returning Materials

There are multiple options:

  • The Circulation Counter, 1st floor Millar Library
  • Drop box by Millar Library South Stairs
  • Drive up drop box, corner Harrison & 10th
  • Items can also be returned by mail or delivery service to:
    Portland State Library
    PO Box 1151
    Portland, OR 97207-1151

Recalling Materials

Checked-out materials can be recalled by another patron at any time. The current borrower will have at least 10 days of use but then must bring the material back to Portland State Library. Borrowers will be notified of a recall by email or written notice.

  • Leaving campus and have materials checked-out? make arrangements with someone to receive notices and return recalled items before you leave.

  • To avoid overdue charges, return items before the new due date

  • There is no grace period on recalled items.

  • Everyone will be charged late fees on overdue materials.

Fines, Fees, and Charges

Portland State Library uses the fine system to ensure maximum availability of materials to all of its communities. Please consult the Fines, Fees, and Charges page for more information and a complete fine chart.

Lost or Damaged Library Materials

Please consult the Lost or Damaged Library Materials page for more information and a complete chart of charges.

Privacy, Identification, and Account Access

The Library's Privacy Policy restricts public access to most records and information without consent of the user, in accordance with the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA or Buckley Amendment) and Oregon State Revised Statute 192.502 (22).

  • Each borrower must present a PSU ID card or valid picture ID (State issued, Passport) to borrow any materials.
  • No one may borrow materials using another person's card or account.
  • The Library does not release information about items borrowed, or any other account information to the public without the user's consent. The "public" includes (but is not limited to) classmates, parents, domestic partners, spouses, and instructors.
