Gifts of Materials

The Portland State Library is limiting pre-arranged gifts of material that support the instructional and research programs of the University.  If you would like to make a donation of materials to the Library, we require that donors discuss their donations with a librarian before delivering them to the Library.  We will ask for you to prepare a detailed title list as part of this process.

Please discuss your donation with the appropriate subject librarian, and kindly provide a list of titles or detailed information about your collection.

Materials

If the materials are not accepted by the Library, we recommend donating them to the Friends of the Multnomah County Library.

We do not accept the following materials:

  • Textbooks
  • Popular magazines
  • Mass-market publications
  • Self-published books
  • Materials in poor condition
  • Superseded formats (LPs, 8-track/VHS tapes, cassettes and floppy disks)
  • Materials that might cause the Library to be liable for copyright infringement (i.e., illegally copied audio and video recordings).

Tax Information

Portland State Library encourages donors to discuss prospective donations and appraisals with their attorneys or tax specialists prior to making their donations. Donors also are encouraged to consult the Web site of the Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov) for more information.

Please note: The University Library is able to process donor IRS Tax Form 8283 only in special, pre-approved circumstances.

Acknowledgement of Gifts

If a gift of material is accepted by the Library, the donor will receive a receipt at the time of donation. This receipt serves as a proof of your charitable donation. The receipt does not include any statement of value and we encourage you to work with your tax expert for proper valuation.
